Athens,
Greece Around the Acropolis: The
Acropolis was unbelievable. We were the first ones
through the gate at 8:30 and it stayed relatively quite
for about an hour. To be here and to essentially have it
all to ourselves was an amazing experience. To finally be
able to see the Parthenon in person was a dream come
true--granted many of its columns had been taken apart for
"restoration and preservation". Still amazing
with all the scaffolding. Theatre of Dionysus: Ancient Agora, now a 30-acre archeological site, served as marketplace and administrative center from the 6th century BD to 500 AD. Socrates, Aristotle, and St. Paul all preached here. (# 1) Stoa of Attalos--reconstructed in the 50's. (# 3) Statue of Hadrian. (# 5-9) the Hephaesteion 415 BC--the best-preserved classical temple in Greece. (# 11) Agia Apostoli. The Olympic Stadium (the Panathenaic Stadium) was the site of the first modern Olympics in 1896. (# 7) We caught some tourists racing on the track! (# 9) names of Greek athletes who won gold and silver medals at the Atlanta games. Parliament Building and Syntagma Square: (# 1-3) Place Syndagma. (# 4) It's all Greek to us! (# 6) the Parliament Building. (# 7-11) the changing of the guard in the front of the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. Our
Hotel: views from the our hotel window.
