Florence,
Italy
12/25/02 - 12/27/02
These
are photos taken around the city. The first two photos were taken out
of the hotel room window.
Florence's Duomo, Santa Maria del Fiore, is topped by Brunelleschi's
famous dome (you can catch a glimpse of it in the first photo-look for
the orange tile. The dome is also visible in the first photo from the
Piazza della Signoria section).
This is Europe's fourth largest church and Florence's tallest building.
Santa Maria Novella (# 1-2) was particularly enjoyable to see
in person (especially for Jessie-she drew the front facade in one of
her first year architecture studios). Photo 3 is of Spedale degli
Innocenti, an old orphanage, with an arcaded loggia by Brunelleschi.
The Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in the city, spans the Arno
River. Originally occupied by blacksmiths and butchers, they were later
replaced by jewellers and goldsmiths. The jewellers still remain-lining
the bridge with their shops.
The Piazza della Signoria is home to the Palazzo Vecchio
, Ammannati's Fountain of Neptune (# 1), and the
Loggia dei Lanzi. The Palazzo Vecchio (# 1-4), with a copy
of Michelangelo's David in front (the original is at the Uffizi next
door), is the town hall. The
Loggia die Lanzi (# 6) is a magnificent outdoor space exhibiting
numerous statues, including Giambolgna's The Rape of the Sabine
Women (seen in the foreground of # 5 with the Palazzo in the
background). The last photo is looking towards the Piazza from a hall
in the Uffizi gallery.
